Johny Webb and Robbert van den Broeke
A Dutch medium, a crop field near Breda, and a sample sent to the Natural History Museum
The story
Robbert van den Broeke is a Dutch medium. He says he has watched crop circles appear around him for most of his life and that he photographs presences that visit him. He has been a well-known, and much-debated, figure in Dutch paranormal circles for two decades.
In 2018 Johny Webb travelled to the Netherlands to spend several days with Robbert around Breda and Hoeven. He went curious rather than convinced. He walked the fields, filmed what he could, and listened. He also brought home samples of tentacle-like material that Robbert said had been found at a field site, so that an independent laboratory could say what it was.
Those days became The Robbert van den Broeke Chronicles, a series of short documentaries made with the Free Cosmos team, and later a public conversation with the researcher and author Grant Cameron.
What happened, in order
- 2015Robbert says the tentacle material first appeared at a field site near Breda. This is his account; it has not been independently confirmed.
- 17 June 2018A crop formation appears in a field in Holland. Robbert says he was told beforehand that it would come, and he and filmmaker Wm Gazecki went to the site.
- June 2018Johny takes part of one of the samples to the Natural History Museum in London and asks a simple question: what is it?
- LaterJohny and Robbert talk the results through with Grant Cameron, and Johny records his own testimony of the visit.
What the museum found
On the record
In June 2018 the Natural History Museum identified the sampled tissue as common octopus (Octopus vulgaris), from a DNA barcode match. Johny asked for the technical basis and received the laboratory's raw data.
Still open
How the material came to be where it was said to be found, well inland. The laboratory answered what it was. It could not answer how it got there, and nobody has independently established that.
That is how Johny tells it too: an experience can be real to the person who had it, and a laboratory result can still point somewhere ordinary. Keeping those two things separate is the point.

Other views
Not everyone who has watched Robbert closely agrees with his account. The Dutch writer Constantia Oomen, a firm sceptic, has followed him since the mid-2000s and published a series of “Behind the scenes” posts between 2015 and 2020 setting out why she doubts the phenomena.
