The UK Desk: a near-miss over Heathrow, and the Rendlesham Halt memo revisited

A British Airways jet reportedly experienced a 'near-miss' with an unknown object near Heathrow this week, while new disclosures continue to emerge from the Pentagon's UAP files. We also delve into the enduring Rendlesham Forest incident, examining what the pivotal Halt memo truly recorded.

A British Airways jet carrying 256 passengers reportedly experienced a 'heart-stopping near-miss' with a 'mystery UFO' at 5,800 feet after departing Heathrow, according to The Sun. While such reports often prove to be misidentifications of drones, balloons, or other conventional aircraft, the involvement of a commercial airliner and the proximity reported make this an item worth close attention and potential official inquiry.

This week in Britain

Beyond the Heathrow incident, regional reporting from Armagh I notes at least one UFO sighting in Armagh skies in recent months. Specific details beyond the report of a sighting itself are not publicly available from the headline, but any confirmed observation in Northern Ireland contributes to the broader understanding of phenomena reported across the British Isles. Meanwhile, a report in UnHerd suggests that new UFO files may reopen the historical 'Foo fighter' mystery, referencing unexplained aerial phenomena observed by pilots during wartime, which has a particular resonance in European defence history.

Beyond these shores

The broader international discussion this week has been dominated by a significant new batch of Pentagon UFO files, detailed by various outlets including The Daily Star, Geo News, NTD News, Daily Mail, The Independent, and AOL.com. These releases reportedly include accounts of 'black triangle' craft moving at high speeds without sound over sensitive US military sites. Some reports even mention descriptions of 'alien corpses' and 'egg-shaped craft'. The consistent appearance of 'black triangle' reports in official documentation, particularly concerning their alleged performance characteristics and stealth, continues to highlight a persistent category of unidentified aerial phenomena.

From the files: Rendlesham Forest, December 1980

In the last week of December 1980, US Air Force personnel at the twin bases of RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk reported lights and an object in Rendlesham Forest, just beyond Woodbridge's back gate. The case rests above all on one page: a memorandum headed Unexplained Lights, sent to the Ministry of Defence by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt, the deputy base commander, and dated 13 January 1981.

The memo records that early on the morning of 27 December two security police patrolmen saw unusual lights outside the back gate and, thinking an aircraft might have come down, went out to look. Those who approached described a glowing object, metallic in appearance and triangular in shape, two to three metres across the base, which lit the forest with a white light and moved off through the trees. The date is itself one of the case's oddities: most later accounts, including the witnesses' own, put that first night on the 26th.

The memo goes on to say that three depressions were found the next day where the object was reported to have stood, and that the area was checked for radiation the following night, with peak readings in the depressions. What those readings meant has been argued over ever since: some have called them significant, others point out that the levels were low and the instrument was not built for the job.

It then records that later in the night a red, sun-like light was seen moving and pulsing through the trees, and that three star-like objects were seen in the sky, one of which appeared to beam down a stream of light. Halt was present for this second episode, and a tape he recorded in the forest that night surfaced some years later.

What the memo does not do is reach a conclusion. It describes; it does not say what was seen. The MOD's line was that nothing of defence significance had occurred, and it took the matter no further at the time. Sceptical researchers have since put forward the Orford Ness lighthouse, bright stars and the confusion of a dark forest as explanations for at least part of what was reported; not all of the witnesses accept them.

Why it still matters: Rendlesham is the British case that will not stay closed because it began with a written report from a senior officer, and because that report, read plainly, says a good deal less than the legend that has grown around it.
